In 1848, a gentleman named Vilfredo Pareto was born in Paris France. He went on to become an economist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. In 1896 he wrote a paper where he asserted that roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. That idea became known as the Pareto Principle. Today we know it as the 80/20 Rule and we apply it to almost everything from business to entertainment.
Those who excel at what they do make it look easy and simple. Think about your skill set and how you achieved success. For most, it wasn’t love at first sight. It was frustrating at first, but in time results started to improve. Now, its second nature and we barely acknowledge the complexity that once drove our anxiety. So what happened? Three things occurred that helped to convert complexity to simplicity.
- We learned what to expect. One of the habits that Steve Covey talks about in his book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” is that we begin with the end in mind. Being able to envision where we are going helped us to see what’s ahead and smooth out the process before we get there.
- We were able to process greater amounts of information, quicker. As we became more familiar with the process, we learned to look for critical indicators that gave us feedback on our progress. We learned to ignore information that experience had taught us wasn’t essential for our success. Therefore, we had more time to focus on relevant information, process it quicker and make better decisions
- We learned to combine steps and stream line the process. As we repeated the process over and over, shortcuts and improvements became obvious and we incorporated them into our routines. Some steps we shortened, and others we combined to eliminate steps. Soon the complex became simple, and we reduced the process down to the essentials.
At MidSouth Casters & Equipment we wanted to make it easy for our customers to select the right caster. Currently most suppliers and manufacturers proudly display every type of wheel and option they are capable of creating. It is easy to get overwhelmed by all of the different products and options that appear when you begin your search for casters. Instead of a large array of products and options, we wanted to highlight a limited number of products that we could apply to most of the applications. We incorporated the Pareto principle and created the MAXUM™ Series line of Wheels and Casters. The MAXUM™ Series is more than just a product line, it is a caster selection system designed to make it easy to select the right caster for your application. Of course, you’re still welcome to call. We love talking to our customers.
